Canon 7D announced!

No camera is perfect, but some come awfully close.  I have a soft spot for Canon for their smooth and silky files.  I absolutely love the skin tones, and the fact that the files are so easy to work with in post production.

Good news Canon fans, the new 7D has just been announced!

Here are a few specs from Canon’s website:

So, what’s so special about this camera? There are lots of great features, but I’ll name the ones that are important to me. It shoots up to ISO 6400 in 1/3 stop increments. It’s the second Canon DSLR camera able to shoot in HD 1080p mode, and is the first to do 24p natively! On top of that, it looks like Canon has finally ponied up to offering a more advanced autofocus system with multiple cross sensor AF points in a camera that doesn’t set you back more than four grand (1D MK III). Last but not least, it has a pop-up flash that acts as a master controller for those who use Canon speedlites off-camera.

Overall, it’s a fantastic camera, and looks to compete directly with the Nikon D300s. In the meanwhile, I’ll be waiting for that elusive 24p firmware update to my 5D MK IIs.

September 11, 2009 - 9:08 pm Aaron Bailey - ok, I have to admit it, if I didn't have so much $$$ invested in Nikon glass (which I love), I'd be jumping ship b/c of this camera. It trumps the D300s. I am wondering if Nikon will always be behind in this arena since they do not produce their own sensors and Canon already has a very successful line of video cameras and the technology for hybrid DSLRs. The d300s is a bad band aid to the d90. I will hold out for ONE more year in hopes for a full frame camera from from Nikon that will give me video with manual control and 24p to 50 - I love the slow motion you can get by shooting at 50 or 60 and putting it into a 25p line - I've been eying the the Panasonic GH1, but the 7d looks like it's in a class by itself.

September 11, 2009 - 10:02 pm admin - It may take them a little longer to do it, but Nikon always seems to come around. Their FX sensor in the D700 and D3 is phenomenal, as you're well aware. Canon will probably always be ahead in sensor tech. They are just so much larger of a company and spent all that time on CMOS R&D. I was going to say that I just wish they listened to professional photographers more rather than just continuing to push technology. However, they proved that they actually care about us with the new featuresthey're putting into a sub $2,000 camera. I have a feeling the next version of the 1D and 5D series are going to be quite nice. Still, I'd rather they refine the AF system and revamp their wireless E-TTL system first. Speaking of AF, AF system they are putting into this camera is what *should* have been in the 5D MK II. I have no doubt that Canon would not have pushed this hard if not for the continuing competition from Nikon. It's win-win combination for us as the end users!
